This gulf, not far from Trapani and Erice, also saw Aeneas' ships land. Here, too, the Elemians ruled, with king Aceste, of Trojan origin. Aeneas, since many Trojans, after six years at sea, wanted to stay here, helped build the city on the hill. It took the name Acesta, after the king, but through the centuries it became Segesta. It has a superb view and a magnificent Temple, well preserved. Castellammare was Segesta's port of call. The beach was alive with fishermen and children when I visited here in 1985. It is the second painting I did for Morena and Pippo from Palermo. Challenging work because it is large and full of detail.
